Star Platinum (Music Arena GH)
Jan 8, 2022
I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Music Arena GH about my new single "play along." We talked about the process of creating the song and my overall views and goals as an artist. Check it out!
This time we had a few questions and answers with Lauren Drake. Lauren is a young and talented indie folk/pop singer and songwriter from Seattle, WA. She’s a very unique artist. As a matter of fact, her style is something that is quite wistful and sombre sounding inspired by the same theme. Drake has an understanding and admiration for the best of pop music, alongside a voice that combines the motivating of words with a more uplifting melody.
What is your real name?
My real name is Lauren Siena Drake.
What’s your official Stage Name (showbiz name)?
I go by Lauren Drake.
What do you do (fashion, music, comedy, artist, dancer, etc.)?
I’m a musician, but I also do acting work.
How did you get into what you do (music, modelling, art, dance, etc.?)
I’ve been singing since I could talk, and wrote my first song at 11 years old. Ever since then, I’ve been using music and my writing to fill some sort of emotional void; if there isn’t a song out there that perfectly describes what I’m feeling, I need to write it myself. I feel like there’s a superpower in being able to eloquently articulate and share feelings, and music does that better than pretty much anything else.
What field or genre are you into and give a brief description of what your career/profession/ field feels like?
I think the best label for what I do is singer-songwriter type stuff. However this song in particular has been described as an indie folk/pop/americana/rock sort of vibes. I’m new to this scene, and I’m still trying to get my footing in what my unique voice and place in it all really is. But I think this song is a true piece of me and my heart, and is therefore a good place to start with all of that.

Who or what inspires you or motivates you? And why?
I’ve been a Taylor Swift fan ever since I was eight years old. She’s pretty much the reason I started playing guitar and writing music as a kid. The way her music, artistry and just overall persona has arc-ed and grown this past decade has been so inspiring and extraordinary to follow. I really, really look up to her, as well as Kacey Musgraves and Maggie Rogers in particular. These women are unafraid to share their hearts and souls with other people, and I think that is just the most beautiful thing you could ever do. I want to do the same.
What was your first project and the people you worked with and which year?
The first song I released was called “okay.” It was released in March 2021 and produced by Jacob Reed. I wrote it about what I call the “magical uncertainty” of falling in love. That sort of anxiousness mixed with delight and excitement in the possibility of safety and security that this new person could bring.
How many projects do you have so far?
I’ve now released three songs; “okay,” my debut single, “play along,” this single, and my second single was called “malibu.” I go to school at Pepperdine University, and “malibu” was a love letter to my friends there. We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs the past few years, mainly dealing with tragedy our freshman year and then separation due to covid the following year. We’ve learned that joy is the greatest act of resistance in the face of hard times, and “malibu” was a celebration of that.

How long have you been doing what you do?
I’ve been releasing music only for about a year now. I’ve been performing since I was a kid, but this world is excitingly new.
What do you look out for in this line of business?
Authenticity and humility. I think the best kind of creative work comes from an honest place of sharing and vulnerability. That’s when the best and most real connections are made.
Have you won any awards or been nominated for an award? Or in short, any achievement? Both in and out of your career path.
I’ve been nominated for a few awards in the theatre/acting world, but none for my music.

What is this new release about?
“play along” explores the disillusionment of growing up through the lenses of a failed romantic relationship, uncertainty about the future and career goals, and finally intense struggles with mental health. The entire point of the song is that I’m struggling to catch up and contribute to my own life in a meaningful way, but I then come to realize that there is nothing to “prove;” meaning and self-worth are not “earned” or “won” but are simply intrinsic to who we are. We write our own songs, our own stories, and our own lives simply by being.
Who and how many people worked on it?
The song was produced in Hollywood, CA with John Lowell Anderson. He was such an amazing producer, collaborator and mentor and I am so grateful to have worked with him. Jacob Reed helped me make one of the first demos as well. The song was written by me.
What can your previous and new audiences anticipate from you in the future?I’ve got a lot of songs and a lot of demos ready to go into production. I want to hit the ground running in 2022. I graduate from school this year, so I’m hoping to dive more into the music world with the flexibility I’ll have after that time. I’m on my way to claiming my place and my voice in this industry, and I hope to have more and more wonderful people join me on this crazy journey.
Conclusion: Lauren is a rising star in the music industry, and with her new single “Play Along” recently released, she’s sure to make waves in the entertainment world.
